It is important that your child’s educators are aware of the struggles she has during transitions and non-structured situations.
- If they are aware, teachers can positively cue and target transition activities when your child needs extra support and assistance to be successful.
- Suggestions for transitions at home can easily be adapted for school.
- If your child struggles to transition from school to home or after school care (yes, some children do), it may be helpful to have organized activities (a snack and short break to unwind from the day) planned immediately following the end of the school day.
If your child struggles with the transition from one grade level to the next, from elementary to middle school, and from middle school to high school, contact your child’s new principal or counselor to arrange a visit to the new school ahead of time in order to meet teachers and practice the daily schedule of moving from class to class.
