Children with attention challenges often do not understand about voice volume and that different circumstances call for different levels of volume. They may talk too loudly when in small gatherings and be seen as overly obnoxious and loud. They may also talk too quietly when trying to speak to others who are far away and may be seen as shy and quiet.
To help with the challenges related to voice volume, it is a good idea to tape record children in conversation. Play back the tape so they can hear what they sound like. Helping a child become aware of how to speak when close and far away is important. Role-play might include standing next to your child and talking loudly yourself. Then ask him what he thought about the experience of being yelled at. Explain to him that is the same way others feel when he is loud. Volume modulation can be achieved by giving the student feedback at different distances.
